Freezing Temps Expected Soon. Be Ready With Your Water
Freezing temperatures are on the way to the ranch, and we would like to provide you with some great tips to help the water flow. Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid 20’s by later next week and that could really cause some problems with water freeze ups. Here are some tips that we have seen work on the ranch to help keep these problems at a minimum.
- Make sure meter lid is on. This prevents cold air from entering the meter can and freezing the meter and meter setter.
- Place a garbage bag filled with insulation or old blankets inside your meter can. This helps trap the ground heat inside the meter can and keeps it warmer during the winter months.
- Always make sure snow is piled on your meter. Snow is a great insulator to have on top of the meter. If you have to dig it up, make sure to pile snow back on it.
- Mark your meter with a PVC pole or something rigid that is at least 6′ tall. This will make it easier to find when it is buried in snow. If you have an emergency and need to shut off the water this will help.
- Make sure all crawl spaces and colder areas have some heat or heat tape around your pipes.
- Shut off your meter if you are not going to be at your property for long periods of time. If your furnace goes out and lines freeze break you will not be flooding.
We hope these tips help as everyone prepares for the winter months and the cold temperatures that come with it.
